ChampionChip
The 2013 Comrades Marathon will be timed using the ChampionChip Timing system. This system which has been successfully used at the Comrades Marathon over the past 17 years, allows for an accurate record of not only finish times, but also records runners split times taken at various points during the event.
Prior to the 2000 event, the Comrades Marathon Association with the support of its sponsors, made a sizable contribution to ensuring that this timing technology became more affordable to runners. The CMA purchased 2 sets of timing equipment for use on the finish line and subsidised the cost of 24 000 chips by almost 50%.
Due to the size and nature of the event, the CMA have made it compulsory for each athlete to own their own personal ChampionChip in order to take part in the event. It is the only timing system that will be used at the 2013 Comrades Marathon.
With an increasing number of events using the ChampionChip system, the CMA would like to encourage novice Comrades runners and runners who may have lost their ChampionChip to purchase a chip prior to entering the event so as to ensure that your information is correct on the CMA database. This will allow for the correction of errors prior to Registration at the Comrades Experience Expo, so that you spend as little time as possible queuing to collect you race numbers.
The cost of the Green or Blue ChampionChip is approximately R80.00. This price is also subject to the Rand/Euro Dollar exchange rate.
All appointed ChampionChip Timers carry a stock of chips, which you can purchase from them at any of the ChampionChip timed events. Chips can be purchased directly from ChampionChip Africa by sending an email to info@championchip.co.za or calling in at their office address:-
