MY COMRADES STORY

“Since I was a little boy, I have had a love for running. I remember my primary school days when I felt I could run forever. Running is good for your physical and mental health. In 2010, whilst in matric, I ran my first Two Oceans Half Marathon in 2:14 and in 2014 I ran the Gauteng Sport Challenge Marathon in a time of 4:15.

I entered the Comrades Marathon after my friend told me about Run Walk For Life Rustenburg. I joined Run Walk For Life and met Hetta the manager, and later, Johnny Young, who helped me to prepare for my first Comrades.

I trained hard and followed my program. I ran the Loskop Ultramarathon in 5:15, thanks to Johnny who helped me and motivated me to see my training through.

I do long runs with my club members on the weekends. When I get tired, Johnny is there to push me and remind me that I can do it. He is a great support and gives me good advice. When I am running a race and it gets difficult, I remind myself that this is my dream and I can do it.

I am blessed to have many friends and family members who support me too. On Comrades race day, I was standing on the start line and couldn’t believe that my dream was coming true. I got tears in my eyes. The feeling was awesome.

Being part of the Comrades Marathon is a feeling you cannot describe. You have to experience it yourself. I finished my Comrades in 11:49. My dream had come true. And now I will reach for the next dream.”

This month’s winner of the Arnica Ice hamper is Tjaart van der Walt.
