First-time Comrades runners will find finishing the annual road-running challenge way more achievable, thanks to the Comrades Marathon Association’s (CMA) provisions for novice entrants. It’s all in line with the Runner’s First Initiative.
The CMA has teamed up with major sponsor, Bonitas Medical Fund to host its nationwide Novice Seminars across the country, with the first seminar in Johannesburg next Tuesday. With nearly a third novice entrants in #Comrades2018, the goal is to get all of these first-timers race-ready for Sunday, 10 June 2018.
At the seminars relevant training information and advice from the Comrades Coach, Lindsey Parry and other experts, including a medical doctor and dietician are shared. Some of the topics include injury prevention; treatment of injuries; training; running shoes; tapering and race day strategies.
The medical doctor will advise on the dangers of taking medication whilst running. The dietician will cover runners’ nutrition, including what to eat and drink while training, as well as race day sustenance.
Registered Dietician Nicki de Villiers, works with athletes and guides them to optimum nutrition to train well and achieve their running goals. Nicki has been working in the field of dietetics for around 20 years and has been concentrating on sports nutrition for the last 12 years.
These seminars are interactive and highly informative. Entry is free and bookings are not necessary. For dates and times, follow this link:
To further enhance the experience of novice entrants this year, the CMA will cater for first time entrants at the Novice Hospitality area at the annual three-day Comrades Expo. This is designed to motivate and engage with the athletes, where select personalities and Comrades legends will offer talks and motivation to runners in this year’s race.
The fresh and fun offerings that have been set aside for the novice athlete goes hand in hand with making the overall Comrades experience memorable, festive and inspirational.
