General rules and information


The comrades marathon is run under the auspices of kwazulu-natal athletics and athletics south africa. The cma, kzna and asa rules will govern this event.



Entry fee


South African Entry R230.00

Entry Fee is waived for holders of 25 or more

Comrades medals.



Route & distance


The route distance for this years event is 89km. The distance is subject to change and will be confirmed in the final race instructions.



Closing date


We urge all runners to take careful note of the entry process and cut-off date and request that you enter early to avoid disappointment. Entries will be done in 2 phases.



Phase 1 entries open - 1 September to 31 October 2009



On the 1st of September 2009 entries will open to all previous Comrades Runners ONLY. Phase 1 will be capped at 15,000 entrants and will close on 31st of October 2009, or whichever comes first (eg. if we receive 15,000 entries by the 10th of October 2009 then no further entries will be accepted for previous Comrades runners for 2010).To qualify as a “previous runner” you must have started in a previous Comrades Marathon, even if you didn’t actually finish within the 12 hour time limit.



Phase 2 calling all novices - 1 November to 30 November 2009



On the 1st of November 2009 entries will open to all Novices ONLY and will be capped at 5,000. Entries will close on 30 November 2009, or whichever comes first (eg. if we received 5,000 novice entries by 15th November 2009 then no further entries will be accepted).



No entries will be taken in 2010!


Qualifying



If you do not supply qualifying details with your entry, you must submit your details by no later the 26 April 2010. Failure to meet the qualifying criteria or submitting of your qualifying details will result in your entry being rejected.
As in 2009, runners will be able to enter before they qualify. This means while all entries will have to meet the entry criteria above, runners will still be allowed to qualify in official qualifying races up until 26th April 2010. Upon qualification, runners simply need to give the time and details of the qualifying race through to the CMA office. Upon receiving the qualifying information the runner’s entry will be confirmed.




Under no circumstances will refunds be made.
If you fail to meet the qualifying criteria you will not be able to participate.

No substitution will be allowed.


Rights reserved



Any irregularities in your entry form will result in a rejected entry form. Comrades Marathon Association reserves the right to accept or reject any entry, subject to the rules of IAAF, ASA and KZNA.



Restriction on entry



The Comrades Marathon is restricted to registered runners only. South African entrants must be current 2010 licensed members of a club affiliated to Athletics South Africa. The domicilium rule will be strictly enforced. No athlete may run for a club other than a club registered in the Province in which they are domiciled. No wheelchairs nor any mechanical aids will be permitted. No runner may run with an animal under any circumstances. Under no circumstances may runners display a political slogan.




Please do not duplicate your entry, as entry fees are not refundable under any circumstances.

No faxed entries will be accepted!

No late entries will be accepted.

Under no circumstances will substitution be allowed.


Age restriction



The minimum age requirement is that the athlete must be 20 years or older on the day of the event.



Electronic timing / championchip


It is compulsory to wear a ChampionChip for the duration of the race. Entrant who do not own their own ChampionChip must purchase or order and pay for a chip when submitting their entry form. Should you place an order with your entry form, please note that the chip will be in your race number pack and can ONLY be collected from the respective registration points. Chips ordered with the entry for will NOT be issued before these dates. Should you wish to use your chip for qualifying races before Comrades, we advise you to purchase a chip directly from ChampionChip. The chip must be registered in the runner's name and NOT belong to someone else.

Start seeding



All entrants must qualify by completing an officially recognised race according to the following table during the period 24 May 2009 and 26 April 2010. All entrants will be seeded according to their qualifying times. Entrants qualifying for batches A and B are required to submit proof of qualifying time. Previous Gold Medalists and 2009 Silver Medalists automatically qualify for seeding in Batch A.




All entrants who completed the 2009 Comrades Marathon may use this as their qualifying race and will be seeded according to their finish time.

Club & license information (for South African Athletes ONLY)




South African entrants must be current 2010 licenced members of a club affiliated to Athletics South Africa. The domicilium rule will be strictly enforced. No athlete may run for a club other than a club registered in the Province in which they are domiciled. Athletes will not be in possession of their 2010 licenses by the time of entry, however athletes will still have to comply with the rule that they must be licensed through an officially registered athletics club affiliated to Athletics South Africa in order to run the 2010 Comrades Marathon. As with the new qualifying criteria, you will be able to enter for Comrades 2010 before having received your 2010 license. You will however have to submit your club name and license number to the CMA before or by the 26th April. Failure to submit these details will result in your entry being rejected. Please note that the CMA will verify your license details with your club.



Cut-off points



The race is run from 'gun to gun'. The cut-off times for these points will be confirmed in the Final Race Instructions. CMA reserves the right to alter these positions. Runners will be required to board a rescue bus and be transported to the finish venue should they not have reached the cut-off points within the specified time.



Acknowledgement of entry


You will receive confirmation of entry from CMA , in the form of a postcard, confirming receipt of your entry and indicating your race number and start batch. It is your personal responsibility to check this card, to confirm that your details have been accurately captured. You must produce this confirmation together with your ChampionChip in order to collect your race number.



Number collection


You must collect your race number and runner's Goodie Bag from the venue you have indicated on your entry form.

These items will not be posted to you.


It is important to note the following when collecting your race number package:


  • All runners MUST produce their ChampionChip when collecting their race number.

  • All runners MUST provide proof of identity in order to collect their race number. ID books, Passport or Driver's Licence.

  • NO race numbers will be issued on race day.

Running kit, sponsorship & advertising



Club colours and the two Nedbank Comrades Marathon 2010 race numbers must be worn on the front and back of your upper body garment throughout the race. Ladies are reminded to wear their race number on the front and back of their upper body garment and NOT on their running shorts as this will result in disqualification. The Nedbank sponsored peak, which you will receive in your runner's courtesy bag, is the only permissible branded headgear permitted on race day. Runners must familiarize themselves with and abide by the advertising rules as per the IAAF and ASA Rulebooks. (IAAF Rule 143 and ASA Rule 13.1 and advertising regulations). These provisions apply for the duration of the race including warming up, all race ceremonies and official press conference. Under no circumstances may a runner display a political slogan. (IAAF Rule 2(a)).



Seconding




The no mobile seconding rule will be very strictly enforced. No seconds may drive, cycle or run alongside any athlete on the route. The stand and hand rule, whereby a runner's seconds may stand at any point on the route and hand refreshments to their athlete while the second remains stationary, will apply. No seconds may travel on the route. Any transgressions will lead to disqualification.



Running with children


Any athlete who runs with a child / children either being carried or running alongside them within the running arena may be disqualified.



General awards



Badges and medals will be awarded to all official finishers who complete the full distance within the 12-hour cut-off.
