Team Comrades has pledged to make this another active year of changing our way of thinking and acting in order to help keep our planet green and we will be encouraging all our runners to do so. If we all work together, we can make a difference.
Here are 5 tips to help you become an eco-friendly runner:
DONATE YOUR OLD SHOES & RUNNING GEAR
At the Comrades EXPO, we provide a bin near our charities section for you to place your old shoes & clothes. These are distributed to under privileged runners and to the physically and mentally disabled. Add a second life to your running gear instead of feeding the landfills.
CUT OUT SINGLE USE PLASTICS
More and more runners are getting on board with hydration packs and reusable water bottles as we realise that even recycling single use plastics takes energy and resources.
Sharing vehicles to your training sessions, races and events helps to reduce your carbon footprint. Races away should be travelled to in a full car – more company for the journey!
Wherever you can, running or not. Local products have a lower footprint as they haven’t had to be shipped in. The second plus is, the more we buy local, the more jobs we create. Maxed Clothing is predominantly sourced from local markets and neighbouring countries & has endeavoured to keep their products well priced, fresh and funky.
Start a recycling station in your home, office and running club. Even if it’s just plastic, paper and glass, any recycling will help to curb carbon emissions from our landfills.
