90KM DOWN RUN

MY COMRADES STORY BY KGOMOTSO EUGENE DIPHOKO

“Thousands of runners at the start. A resolute 6 months of training. Total mileage: 1210 km. 4 enthusiastic Manoni seconding stations, and if I may say so myself, these guys rock!

Hundreds of spectators who cheered and lined up the tortuous roads between Durban and Pietermaritzburg makes for one unforgettable journey. I’ve always read that the Comrades Marathon will change you, and on 9 June; with a single goal in mind - get to the finish line in Pietermaritzburg.

I was about to live it out.

I was poised to run my maiden Comrades, the ultimate human race, and indulge all the energy from the crowds. And so it began at 5.30am. My run was purely 87 smiling kilometres long; and I kept thinking about all the incredible support on my journey.

I had so much FUN running between my club’s seconding stations knowing I’d be met with more smiles and cheers to get to the finish. 11 hrs, 35min and 24 seconds later, my goal was achieved.

Crossing the finish line was the most rewarding feeling in my short running years. So, does running the Comrades Marathon change your life? Absolutely!!! More than 200 days after The Ultimate Human Race, the Comrades high is still there and my novice experience leaves me proud. I’m encouraged to return in 2020 for the “unavoidable” Back2Back medal. I’m eternally grateful to everyone that supported me and for being a part of my journey.”

The winner of this month’s Arnica Ice hamper is Kgomotso Eugene Diphoko.
