90KM DOWN RUN

MY #RACETHECOMRADESLEGENDS BY JACK MORTASSAGNE

“A good UK friend Mark Evans and I signed up for the 90km #RaceTheComradesLegends as we had both registered and qualified for this year’s Comrades. We had also for many years read and spoken about the old London to Brighton race that was almost a UK sister event to the Comrades, having been won by many of the Comrades Legends over the years (Bruce Fordyce, Wally Hayward, Dave Bagshaw etc.) so decided to retrace and run the L2B route for our Virtual Comrades.

Due to traffic congestion and other logistical challenges, the L2B race is sadly no longer run. Bruce Fordyce won the L2B in 1981, 1982 and 1983. Wally Hayward won and broke the L2B Best Time in 1953 being the first runner to break 5h30m. I made contact with the last L2B Race Director, Ian Champion who is now in his 80's who provided all the original route information.

We set off at 05:30 from under Big Ben in London and self-navigated our way along the route to arrive at Brighton Pier in the early evening. That was a total of 88km so we had to do an extra 2km along the promenade in Brighton to make our 90km.

It was a truly memorable experience knowing that we were literally running the L2B route which previous Comrades Legends had raced before and that many succeeded in winning.”
