All Surviving CMA Chairs in ‘Race The Comrades Legends’

All nine of the former (and present) Chairpersons of the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) will be participating in the ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ virtual race on Sunday 14 June 2020, as will the present CMA Vice Chairperson and 8 other current Board members in an unprecedented demonstration of solidarity with the race and unconditional support for one another during this particularly trying time.

CMA Vice Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo will be leading the ambitious charge in going for the traditional 90km official Comrades Marathon distance, planning to head south from his home in Pietermaritzburg utilising the Umbumbulu Road. If successful, he will be awarded the rare and prestigious ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ 90km Gold Medal.

The immediate past two CMA Chairpersons Sifiso Nzuza and Macdonald Chitja, as well as Board member Isaac Ngwenya, with a total of 58 Comrades Marathons between them, will be running appropriately socially-distanced, but together, towards completing the newly-designated Half Comrades or 45km distance, to each earn a genuine ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ 45km Silver Medal.

Chasing the ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ 21,1km Bronze Medal are CMA Board members Steve Mkasi and Pat Freeman, while Board members Les Burnard, Celi Makhoba and Zinhle Sokhela will be going all out, either singly, or with friends or family members, hoping to earn the incredibly attractive and distinctive ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ 10km Matt Black Medal.

Apart from Chitja and Nzuza, when it comes to the other past and present Chairpersons of CMA, it’s a completely different story in terms of ambition,  competitiveness and basic fitness, but rather loyalty, absolute commitment to Comrades and the opportunity to participate in a really significant occasion in the history of the Comrades Marathon, that has attracted every single living past Chairman to participate, regardless of present personal impediments.

Mervyn Williams (and his Double Green Number wife, Paddy who is recovering from recent knee-replacement surgery) will be completing their 5km in Underberg.

Dave Dixon and Barry Varty are presently recovering from major surgery but will both be out on the road; Dave in Pietermaritzburg and Barry in Hillcrest, chasing 5km on Sunday morning, as will Jeff Minnaar recovering from recent illness, Adrian Stowell and Peter Proctor, who intends putting in his 5km run only in the afternoon of Sunday 14th after having completed a long road session on the bike in the morning. The ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ 5km Medal is described as Red Oxide.

As for founding Chairperson of the Comrades Marathon Association, Mick Winn, for the first time in 89 years he will experience being pushed 5km in a wheelchair, by his wife Cheryl, the present Chairperson, as well as other family members. Living as they do right at the top of Fields Hill, they will even have the privilege of running along the genuine Comrades route along the tree-lined Old Main Road in Kloof which is normally the site of the Coca-Cola activation point.

Overall entries to the ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ have surpassed the total number of entries received for the 2020 Comrades Marathon and now stand at nearly 29,000.

Winn says, “The ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ offers runners the added bonus of being part of an event, especially those  who for months have done training runs in isolation and no longer feel the kinship of a close-knit running community. The CMA is calling on you to encourage your family members and friends to get involved in the fun and the action, where such a space was usually reserved only for ultrarunners in the traditional 90km Comrades Marathon. Also, a final reminder to observe all National Lockdown Regulations and please don’t forget your mask or buff to protect yourself and others.”
