NEWS FROM WORLD VISION

Official Handover of the Mahasheng Early Childhood Development Centre

“A fully furnished Mahasheng ECD Centre was officially handed over by the WVSA Board, WVSA CEO and the Senior Leadership Team to the community of Mahasheng late last year. The structure will benefit many children in Ward 14 -Matatiele.

This was a huge relief to two educators who have been teaching the children from a mud house for two years. After receiving training facilitated by Tree through World Vision, they were able to officially start using the school on Tuesday, the 3rd of October 2019.

Mahasheng community has never had a school close-by and as a result; children start school when they are 10 years and older. This is because children have to cross at least three rivers to get to a nearby school which is five kilometres away from Mahasheng.

Due to fear of abuse, flooding rivers and other factors, families will keep children at home until they are able to protect themselves. We are happy to share that this is now a thing of the past as WV donated this ECD Centre to ensure that children have a place to start early childhood learning as soon as possible.

It was comforting to know that the local Department of Social Department is working with the committee of the structure to ensure all registration processes are in order for DSD funding for the sustainability of the structure going forward.

The event was attended by key stakeholders who pledged to support the ECD Centre going forward. This includes Chief Lebenye- representing the Lebenye Chiefdom, Matatiele Municipality SAPS, Department Of Health Maluti District and the community at large.

The event was also honored to have the General Manager of the Comrades Marathon Association, Keletso Totlhanyo, as well as the Chairperson of the Charities & CSI Committee, Mqondisi Ngcobo, attending the handover.

World Vision also wishes to thank the Umzimvubu AP Manager, Tholakele Solomon and team for the amazing job that they are doing in Matatiele. To support the projects of World Vision South Africa, please visit www.worldvision.co.za
