Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust

Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) is a registered charity situated on the Comrades route. Originally founded in 1990 as a ministry of the Hillcrest Methodist Church, for thirty years we have been dedicated to tackling HIV and AIDS and its ramifications through holistic and sustainable interventions.

Our projects include:

  • 24-bed Respite Unit providing 24/7 free medical care for disadvantaged adults and children with advanced stages of AIDS and/or cancer
  • Outpatient clinic offering free health screening, primary healthcare and patient follow-up care
  • HIV testing services onsite as well as at community or corporate wellness campaigns
  • at-school HIV prevention and healthy living education programmes across primary and high schools
  • GoGo project supporting an extensive network of 2000 gogos (grannies) through support groups, skills development and training
  • orphan & vulnerable children/youth project offering targeted care and evidence-based interventions to over 4000 children/youth and their families
  • training programmes for unemployed, out-of-school youth
  • internationally acclaimed arts and crafts project that provides income generation opportunities to local crafters who are breadwinners for their families

OTHANDWENI RESPITE UNIT/HOSPICE

Our Othanweni (“Place of Love” in isiZulu) 24-bed Respite Unit provides free medical care and treatment to disadvantaged adults and children who are in advanced stages of AIDS and or cancer, often with acute or complex opportunistic infections, and who require urgent palliative or respite care.

In 2018 our life-saving respite unit was faced with the potential closure of beds and it was the funding received through the Comrades Marathon that enabled the unit to stay open.

The staff and beneficiaries of HACT are hugely grateful to our runners for their ongoing support and with the race literally running past our front door we will be out in force again on 14 June to cheer on the runners!

COMMUNITY CHEST

Catherine Hopkins is an ultramarathon runner living near Niagara Falls, Canada. In 2020 she will be running her 9th Comrades Marathon, and getting closer to her Green Number. Six of those marathons have been run in support of the Community Chest. The Community Chest work with early Childhood Development, assisting needy children touches her heart and she encourages every international runner, to run for a Comrades charity.

She is a wife, mother, daughter and Granny (which is her favourite thing) and the owner of several Tim Hortons restaurants. Catherine believes that she is privileged to be the Canadian Comrades Ambassador and to share her love of the race, South Africa and the work of Community Chest with her Canadian and American friends.

Community Chest congratulates Catherine for being their Top International Runner and thank her for running her race in support of thousands of needy South African children.

Community Chest also thanks and congratulates Logan Naidoo from KwaZulu Natal for being their Top Local Runner. We are confident he will exceed his R10 000 target for our kids.
