The traditional Comrades Marathon may have been cancelled but the CMA ensured that ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ virtual race got its fair coverage to an international online audience on virtual race day.
The CMA pulled out all the stops to showcase the true spirit of the Comrades Marathon, uniting participants across the globe in one fabulous virtual event and enhancing the Comrades experience via an online broadcast.
The inaugural virtual race, ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ was aired on the Comrades Marathon’s official YouTube channel – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ_5VkqqKV2MBjBSFVKu_rA – and Facebook page – www.facebook.com/ComradesMarathon – from 16:00 to 19:00 Central Africa Time.
Far from the traditional 13-hour live television broadcast which the race has enjoyed over the past three decades through the national broadcaster, SABC, this year’s virtual race broadcast was just short of three hours long but made for an exciting, informative and entertaining take on The Ultimate Human Race over its nearly 100 years of ultrarunning.
The show feature discussions on the virtual race, ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ and included reflections on the Comrades Marathon’s enduring footprint on South African society and the world’s running community over the years.
Featured guests included Athletics South Africa President, Aleck Skhosana, CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn, CMA Medical Convenor, Dr Jeremy Boulter and Colin Hegter of ChampionChip.
In addition to the official afternoon broadcast, the ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ was covered on social media throughout the day in the form of informal, fun interviews with participants, that were streamed live as Zoom chats through the official Comrades Marathon Facebook page.
